🚨 First things first
Something happening basically every night.
A quick rundown of the biggest stories in sports—without assuming you know every player, rule, or stat. Whether you’re at happy hour, in the office, watching with friends, or on a date with a sports fanatic, you’ll have something to contribute to the conversation.
We’ve officially reached the point in the sports calendar where there is something happening basically every night. NFL season is rolling, college football rankings are already getting shaken up, the WNBA playoffs have started, and MLB postseason baseball begins THIS WEEK.
Oh, and by request, we’re finally talking sports betting — because if you’ve ever looked at a betting line and thought why are there plus signs, minus signs and decimals everywhere? this one’s for you. Here’s what you need to know.
🏆 What happened this week
The Panthers gave us hope… then took it back.
After last week’s 34–3 win, I was prepared to believe. Apparently, that was my first mistake. Carolina lost to Cleveland 21–18 after taking an 18–13 lead with just over four minutes remaining. Cleveland answered with a late touchdown, and Bryce Young’s final attempt to get Carolina into field-goal range ended with an interception. So we’re officially 1–2.
Why should you care? Because last week’s Panthers looked like they could surprise people. This week’s Panthers reminded us that being a Carolina fan requires emotional resilience. I will adjust my expectations accordingly.
🏈 College football
Texas survived Rocky Top.
No. 1 Texas went into one of the loudest environments in college football and escaped Tennessee with a 20–17 win. Tennessee made it interesting late, but Texas held on and kept its undefeated season alive.
Why should you care? Winning on the road in college football is hard. Winning as the No. 1 team with an entire stadium hoping you fail? Even harder. Texas survived. Barely.
⚾️ Baseball
October baseball is here.
The MLB regular season is officially over, the 12-team postseason field is set, and the Wild Card round starts Tuesday. And we are getting Red Sox vs. Yankees immediately.
Even if baseball isn’t normally your thing, postseason baseball is different. Every pitch feels dramatic, everyone suddenly has a rally towel, and grown adults become emotionally attached to men they’ve never met. Welcome to October.
🏀 WNBA
The playoffs have already delivered.
The playoffs tipped off Sunday, and we already have something interesting: the No. 8 New York Liberty beat the No. 1 Minnesota Lynx 91–75 in Game 1.
Meanwhile, Las Vegas beat Indiana 102–85, Atlanta beat Washington 92–77, and Golden State absolutely ran away from Dallas 104–80. And remember: the first round is best-of-three. Translation: one bad game matters A LOT.
📺 What to watch this week
Playoff baseball meets primetime football.
⚾️ RED SOX AT YANKEES
Tuesday, September 29 · 8:00 PM ET
One of baseball’s biggest rivalries. In the playoffs. You really don’t need much more of a sales pitch than that. The Wild Card round is best-of-three, so there is almost no room for a bad night.🏈 STEELERS AT BROWNS
Thursday, October 1 · 8:15 PM ET
Cleveland just broke my heart, and now they get a division rivalry game just four days later.🏈 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY
Saturday, October 3
There are plenty of ranked teams in action, but one matchup to circle is No. 4 Miami at Clemson. College GameDay, meanwhile, is heading to Iowa City for Ohio State–Iowa.🏈 LIONS AT PANTHERS
Sunday, October 4 · 8:20 PM ET
THE PANTHERS ARE PLAYING PRIMETIME FOOTBALL. At home. Against Detroit. I don’t know if I’m excited or concerned. Probably both.🏈 FALCONS AT SAINTS
Monday, October 5 · 8:15 PM ET
NFC South football to finish the weekend. And if we’ve learned anything about this division already, assuming you know what’s going to happen is probably a bad idea.🚨 Sports chaos headlines
No peaceful Sundays.
😳 The defending champs lost. Washington shocked the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 33–31, with Marcus Mariota throwing three touchdowns.
🐊 Florida said “Remember US?” Florida beat Ole Miss 52–28 one week after Ole Miss climbed to No. 4 following its emotional win over LSU.
😬 The NFL injury list keeps growing. Week 3 brought another round of notable injuries across the league, because apparently football season cannot simply give us one peaceful Sunday.
🎰 Sports Betting 101
What the heck does “-3.5” mean?
Okay, I got a request for this one and I realized something: Sports betting terminology sounds WAY more complicated than it actually is.
And before we begin: Fi’s Playbook is not telling you to gamble. I’m just making sure that if someone starts talking about their parlay at the bar, you know what the hell they’re talking about.
Consider this education, not financial advice. Now, let’s keep it simple.
➖ The spread
You’ll see something like: Bills -3.5. That means Buffalo is favored to win, and for a bet on Buffalo to win, they need to win by more than 3.5 points. If you see: Panthers +3.5, Carolina can either win the game OR lose by three points or fewer and that bet still wins. The half-point exists specifically so we don’t end in a tie.
💰 Moneyline
This is the easiest one. You’re simply picking who wins the game. No worrying about how many points. Just: who wins? The favorite will usually have a minus (-) number and the underdog a plus (+) number.
🔢 Over/under
You’re not picking a winner at all. You’re betting whether the combined score will finish above or below a number set by the sportsbook. If the over/under is 47.5: Final score 28–24 = 52 total points → OVER. Final score 20–17 = 37 → UNDER.
🧩 Parlay
This is where people get themselves into trouble. A parlay combines multiple bets into one bet. Every pick has to hit for the parlay to win. More picks = potentially bigger payout. Also: more ways for one random player to ruin your entire evening.
Translation: When someone says, “That touchdown just killed my parlay,” you now know why they’re suddenly staring into the distance. And remember: sports betting should be entertainment, not a way to make money. Set a budget you’re comfortable losing and do not chase a loss.
But now, if your boyfriend says, “Babe, let me sign you up for DraftKings so I can get the bonus bet,” you can at least respond: “Fine. But explain the rollover requirements.”
Just kidding. But hopefully now you can actually use that bonus bet without blindly clicking buttons and hoping for the best.
☕️ What’s the tea?
Aaron Rodgers has officially entered his oversharing era.
Apparently Aaron Rodgers decided it was time to open the relationship archives.
During an appearance on teammate Cam Heyward’s podcast, Rodgers got surprisingly candid about some of his very famous exes — including Shailene Woodley and Danica Patrick — and shared his version of why those relationships ended. And considering Rodgers is currently married, people naturally had one question: Sir…why are we talking about this now? 😭
Then things got even messier. Another one of his exes, Mallory Edens, appeared to shade Rodgers on social media after the interview, while people close to Woodley reportedly questioned why he was publicly revisiting a relationship that ended years ago.
The tea: Aaron Rodgers went on a football podcast and somehow gave us a relationship retrospective nobody asked for. Football? ❌ His dating history? ✅ Sometimes the real NFL analysis happens off the field. ☕️
🛋️ Fi’s couch report
Next stop: Sunday Night Football.
Last week I said publicly criticizing the Panthers defense apparently fixed them. So naturally, they responded by losing to Cleveland. At this point, I’m realizing my biggest mistake is trying to understand this team from week to week.
But next up is Lions vs. Panthers on Sunday Night Football in Charlotte — and this time I won’t be watching from the couch. I’ll be at the game. 👀 🏈
So stay tuned because next week, the Couch Report is getting upgraded to an On-Field Report. Primetime Panthers football. In person.
🤯 Sports fun fact
Ever wonder why football uniforms are SO tight? It’s not just because apparently every NFL player needs to show us exactly how many squats they do. 😭
The tighter fit actually serves a purpose: less loose fabric means less for an opposing player to grab onto during a tackle. Jerseys are even fitted around the shoulder pads and torso to keep extra material to a minimum.
So yes, the tiny pants are functional. But they are still very much tiny pants. 😂
💬 One thing to bring up
“Wait… what was the spread?”
That’s it. That’s your line. Now that you know what the spread actually means, this is an elite way to enter a sports conversation without needing to know every single thing about the game.
If someone says a team won by 3, you can casually ask, “Wait, what was the spread?” Because a team can win the actual game… and still not cover the spread. Look at you. Talking sports betting.
💭 Fi’s final thoughts
My favorite part of the sports calendar.
We are officially entering my favorite part of the sports calendar — when you turn on the TV and there is basically always something happening.
Football is fully underway, baseball has reached the playoffs, the WNBA postseason is already causing chaos, and now we can all finally pretend we understand what +3.5 means.
As for the Panthers? I’m no longer making predictions. I have learned my lesson. See you next week.
Now you know. 💚
